This was my first attempt to crochet a gift for someone. The yarn is shetland chunky tweed by patons, mostly acrylic but still nice and soft. I used an ultra basic double-crochet stitch and a lot of trial-and-error for sizing. As it turns out, I made it way too big so I got a little creative. I took in the hat and handsewed a seam, so that it was perhaps 3/4 to 1 inch smaller around the base. I was worried that the yarn would begin to unravel and was also having trouble getting the seam to lie flat against his head so I sewed each loose yarn end into the hat. So far, so good.
