biker babe

Even though I occasionally ride my bike around town, I had never ridden it to work before yesterday morning. And I wasn't even going to write about it because Yeah It's Not That Big A Deal and Lots Of People Do It and What, Are You Looking For A Medal Or Something?. But after a successful morning commute I did a little googling about Bike Commuting and, lo and behold! it's Bike to Work Month, Bike to Work Week and today is Bike to Work Day! What are the odds?
I live about 2.5 miles from my office (lucky) and my bike commute took less than 5 minutes longer than my car commute, even after taking less-direct but lower-traffic back roads. It was breezy and crisp, yet I still got sweaty. I stashed my bike in my office, right next to my desk so I could stare at it all day. My workplace is generally pretty casual, so I wore jeans & chucks. My hair looked a little crazy, but I'm glad I just got it cut again. I used my Moop like I do every other day. Forgot sunglasses. Always feel like the kid from The Shining when I ride my bike. Other than that, smooth sailing.

Can everyone please go read this book? I know I'm years behind on this one, but if you haven't already read this at least once, go read it now. I'm returning my copy back to the library so for you local readers, there will be at least one copy in the library soon. Probably lots more. Oh, and I'm also going to buy it. Because I want to re-read and bend corners and maybe jot some notes in the margin. So you could also borrow my soon-to-be-copy as long as you get it back to me within 2 hours. Joke.

But really, having finally read this book I believe I am obligated to spread the word. It's so good. It's going to be tough following her footsteps in our wee, third-floor apartment with just a narrow window ledge of gardening space... but my favorite farmers' market is outdoors again and I've even got a few seeds a-sproutin'.

rainy day tofu marsala

We actually followed a menu in its entirety from Eating Well last night, which is rare for us.

I won't even copy the recipe here, since we didn't get very creative with it. For the tofu, we minced garlic instead of shallots and we didn't have any thyme. For the potatoes, we had those little yellow ones and used 'em instead of red and we used scallions instead of chives. Made the spinach, straight up.
Both of our respective planned after-work runs were rained out, so might as well fry up some dinner and watch LOST.
