this week on tumblr

It's been awhile since we took a look at the ol' tumblr page, so I thought I'd share with you some things that have caught my eye on the interwebs lately.

This is blowing my mind. Did we seriously get all of these phrases from Billy Shakes?

A real photo. Isn't it incredible? I've linked to her travel stories before, but if you still haven't gotten the chance to read them, please do. They are inspiring and beautiful and raw.

While the poor and middle class fight for us in Afghanistan, and while most Americans struggle to make ends meet, we mega-rich continue to get our extraordinary tax breaks.
My friends and I have been coddled long enough by a billionaire-friendly Congress. It’s time for our government to get serious about shared sacrifice.

Have a great weekend, folks. I may work up the courage to try a hip-hop yoga class tonight, and then tomorrow we head up to Montreal for a wedding. In the meantime, I'm choking down a less-than-delicious version of the TGIF green smoothie. I will not make this one again.

A few things I'd like to share that I've collected over on tumblr...

Even though I've heard these kinds of tattoos don't hold up well over time, I think they are just beautiful.

But better to be scared and moving
than scared and standing still.

I kept returning to this quote all this week, reading and re-reading it and adapting it as my mantra. We all have to keep on moving, keep on reaching upward, keep on chasing down dreams and taking risks.

Reading nook. I'd very much like to lounge here in the mornings and catch up on my books and magazines and daydreaming.

“Teaching girls that their appearance is the first thing you notice tells them that looks are more important than anything,” says Bloom. “I always bite my tongue when I meet little girls, restraining myself from my first impulse, which is to tell them how darn cute/ pretty/ beautiful/ well-dressed/ well-manicured/ well-coiffed they are…It’s our culture’s standard talking-to-little-girls icebreaker, isn’t it?”

-How to Talk to Little Girls by Lisa Bloom, which encourages adults to ask little girls about ideas and books, instead of complimenting their looks.

Isn't this blog header absolutely gorgeous? I wish I were an illustrator, or even just a mediocre enough artist to eek out some drawings every once and awhile.

I am trying to be more conscious about what I put up over at tumblr, instead of using it as a catch-all bookmarking site. So you should be seeing a stronger focus on topics I don't talk about as much here, with a glimpse into what motivates me and what fuels my own passion. And of course, pretty pictures and Sesame Street videos.

Just a few things that I'd like to share with you from my tumblr page this Friday.

She proclaimed to me, giddy in her liberation, “I could just quit my job. I could … I could move to Brazil and teach yoga! I could totally do that!” YES! Yes Yes Yes! That’s the connection to make.

MAKE CHANGES. Take risks, dream big, no bigger, follow through, and don’t ever be passive in your life’s direction. Be an active player – an ACTIVIST – in Every. Thing. You. Do. Statistically speaking, periods of recession are hotbeds of revolution. Now is the time to be extreme. Now is the time to find your bliss and live your truth. There is nothing strong enough to stop you.

This blog was recommended to me recently by my sister and I love it. Love her thoughts on townhouses, babies, aesthetics, food & following your dreams.

Update: You've all heard this by now, but late Friday evening, June 24, 2011, New York State became the sixth state to legalize same-sex marriage with its passage of the Marriage Equality Bill. As I walked home past the state capitol that afternoon, I stopped to throw a few lucky thoughts for justice and equality its way. I am proud to be a New Yorker and to live in a state that recognizes the legal and human rights of its citizens, regardless of sexual orientation. To live just a few blocks from where such an historic moment occurred is exciting and humbling.

My friend is a doctoral student in Earth and Environmental Science and she’s spending a few weeks in Summit, Greenland to learn more about “the frosty and unique Arctic region”. Incredible, right? They get 24-hour sunlight and are in sub-freezing temps all the time. She took this picture at 11pm!

'Tis all for now. Our apartment is painted (which means we can start cooking again!), a friend from Brazil is in town for the next few days and perhaps it will stop raining long enough for us to enjoy the first official week of summer. I rang in the new season with a farm tour and strawberry-picking festival-- read my post about the strawberries and baby goats here!

I'm still trying to get into the swing of the new season. Of waking up early and running before work, of new volunteer commitments, exciting personal projects and longer days. Elaborate meals have been replaced with quick stand-bys and my crafting energy is being directed towards speedily finishing up an important project. I hope to share that with you next week. Until then, take a look at a few things that have recently caught my eye from tumblr.

A California-inspired terrarium-making party! I think I will make a terrarium and host a virtual terrarium-making party this summer on the blog, and hopefully host a real-life one too.

As always, you can see more of what inspires me and makes me smile over at my tumblr page. Have a great weekend.

PS- I re-organized the tabs at the top of the page a little bit and added a description for each one. I hope this helps you navigate the site better as you search through archives by topic. I'm also working on re-labelling posts so that the overall organization of this place makes more sense. Although I don't think these changes should disrupt most readers' experiences, kindly bear with me if they do :)

this week on tumblr (royal wedding edition)

If you thought I could or would stay above the fray surrounding THE WEDDING OF THE CENTURY, then you don't know me very well at all. I'm irrationally drawn to this glorious royal event and all of the hullabaloo, nonsense, over-the-topness and glamor of it all. I mean... princes and princesses! Tiaras! Horse-drawn carriages. I dare you not to get a little bit swept up. Even if you didn't set your alarm for an early-morning live viewing in your PJs and fancy hat, I want to share a few Royal Wedding-themed favorites from Tumblr, just for you. Now go fix yourself a gin and tonic, or cup of tea, and get obsessed.

For your Royal Wedding Party! I feel like a serious failure for not hosting a party. I mean, when I look back on this day in history, I'll have to tell my grandbabies that I was just behaving like a normal human being and did not throw a fantastically over-the-top Royal Wedding party. Future generations will judge me.

I really, truly, sincerely hope that crazy hats become more commonplace. The fascinators are starting to creep back in, but I'm cheering for a full-fledge return of hats. For both men and women. C'mon Kate, if anyone can do it, it's you.

And yes, in case you had any doubts, I woke up early to watch the procession and the wedding live. And yes, of course, I loved every minute of it. Those princes are just the cutest and the new princess is gorgeous, obviously.  And I really like those big trees they brought into the Abbey. Almost like a quiet wedding in the woods, right? Hmm. As a sidenote, it's so cruel that they don't let the bride and groom kiss in the Church of England. I mean, c'mon already.

So that's that. Happy Royal Wedding Day!
